The Aqua Biofilter™ is a unique biofiltration product integrated into our range of floating wetlands, floating reedbeds and floating islands for habitat. The buoyancy of the floating islands is provided by marine grade materials, and growing media including coconut fibre and other materials. Plants grow in the media, roots growing down into the water, where bacterial and algal biofilms form on the roots, which then treat pollutants, and also enable the transfer of nutrients into the plant roots and accelerate the growth of leaves and flowers.
Biomimicy has demonstrated strong technical capability to enhance water management outcomes including pollution removal, nutrient removal and provision of clean water, based on biofilm based biofiltration. Plants occupy the niche that most often is dominated by aglal blooms and aquatic weeds. Floating wetlands, islands and reedbeds fill the nutrient niche growing plants and enhancing biodiversity with fish and frogs spawning in roots, protected from bird predators, whilst plants that often are trampled or predated by animals will find a niche and live on the floating islands. Purifying water is easy with the installation of floating islands and wetlands, in just one day over 100m2 / 1076 sq foot, can be installed and start improving water within a few months. Lakes, ponds, dams can again be enjoy for drinking, bathing, showering and recreation. Wetlands are the kidneys of the landscape, purifying and cleansing waterway pollutants, heavy metals, and excessive nutrients.
Often wetlands and ponds accumulate excessive sediment, nutrients and pollutants whilst water quality declines, algal blooms and aquatic weeds proliferate reducing biodiversity. Restoring ecological function and bio-signal activity requires natural. systems that mimic peak ecosystems -which lad us to design and development the Aqua BiofilterTM in 2004, to improve water quality beyond existing methods for ponds, wetlands and waterways
.
TN Reduction 40-90%
TP Reduction 50-95%
TSS Reduction 50-100%
Transparency 50- 252%
Metals 50 – 90%
Bacteria 50% – 90%
Heavy Metals Reductions in Arsenic, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Mercury methylation, particularly when metals are collidal, colloidally suspended. The fine roots caputre nutrients and metals on the algal and bacterial. biofilm, creating a thick mesh to capture all pollutants.
Advanced Biofiltration Research and Technology development has been an emerging science for the last 30 years. Installations in Australia, Malaysia and China and USA have demonstrated the feasibility of the technology, and its applications in aquaculture, stormwater treatment, sewerage and on-site sewage treatment, industrial. effluent treatment, often for water re-use.
The Aqua BiofilterTM floating wetland treatment technology that can be utilised within a wetland treatment train either retro-fitting or designed into future wetlands. Detention basins can be designed larger a deeper, effectively providing more storage and HRT. Wetlands can also be sized smaller as a result, bringing down costs, achieving best practice and effectively treating TN, TP, TSS and reducing heavy metals. Ecological and human health can benefit from floating wetlands, and biomimicy of natural. systems restores natural. balance.
